SNL Digest: Awkwafina (10/6/18)

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE -- "Awkwafina" 1748 -- Pictured: Host Awkwafina in Studio 8H during a promo -- (Photo by: Rosalind O'Connor/NBC)

Awkwafina kills it in her first (and hopefully not last) SNL hosting gig.

I’m not sure anyone’s had a better debut as an actor this summer than Awkwafina.  Between Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8, she was stealing the scene every time she popped up.  On SNL, she tapped into the same 2-3 notes of her performances in tehse films, but it felt like a well-deserved victory lap after a successful summer.

What You Missed

Cold Open: CNN Breaking News

One on hand, props to SNL for cranking this out under the wire, but this was depressing as hell and not nearly funny enough.

Monologue

This was a great monologue that showcased Awkafina’s personality and why she’s quickly become a standout in things like Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians.

Dance Battle

Kate McKinnon was quietly great in this sketch as babytooth.  Watching a dance crew pop it to the Price is Right theme was also very good.

Presidential Alert

This was a very good ad for Cricket Wireless.

Hidden Tales of Egypt

cute, great, short.

Ted Cruz Rally

I have seen the Ted Cruz Failing to Dunk A Basketball Video and this is accurate.

Weekend Update

  • The Law and Order clip was bang on.
  • The slight pause in the list of topics to rile Republicans was *italian chef kiss*
  • Mikey and Alex’s Don Jr. and Eric are one of the only good pieces of political comedy that the show has done in the Trump era.
  • Michael Che calling back to “it’s a very tough time”…is comedy 101
  • Pete Davidson responding to Kanye’s speech was very good.

So You’re Willing to Date a Magician

Aquafina’s character “not being picky” was a great starter detail.  Leslie was great as the host of this, even when she lost it.

Kyle’s weird character details were very good.

Baby Shower

“Pizza is a plate”

The Pumpkin Patch

Mikey Day’s reactions throughout this clip about violating pumpkins were amazing.

New York Film Festival Round Table

Debette Goldry is one of my favorite Kate McKinnon characters.  Heidi’s Alison Janney is the first bit of character work I’ve seen from her.
