Donald Glover brings his offbeat energy to some great SNL sketches.
I’ve loved Donald Glover’s sense of comedy as an actor since he made occasional appearances on 30 Rock, through Community, and now on Atlanta, his show on FX. He’s got an energy and an attitude when it comes to comedy that feels like an interesting ingredient to add to the mix at SNL, and I wasn’t disappointed by the choices he made.
What You Missed
Cold Open
Martin Short as Trump’s doctor was great, as was Kate as Rudy Giuliani and Cecily as Melania, the rest of this was just alright.
“We’re on a commercial break, right?” “NO!”
Monologue
I figured out where this was going with the clarinet and was NOT disappointed.
Courtroom Scene
“Move your friend Scott’s blood around with your finger until you can read it!”
This was an excellent lead sketch.
Friendos
“Migos goes to group therapy” is a better sketch premise than I would have expected it to be.
LAMBO
Razz P. Berry
This is the weirdest, most specific thing, and it made me so happy.
A Kanye Place
THIS is how to do politically-tinged comedy right now, SNL
Dirty Talk
This feels like a classic setup, but it is executed very well.
Weekend Update
- WU’s coverage of Rudy Giuliani’s whole thing this week is great
- Pete Davidson! Roasting Colin/Michael!
- LESLIE JONES! Singing Sarah McLaughlan and talking about actual bad relationships she had.
Lando’s Summit
This was short, sweet, and to the point.
Barbie Instagram
This is perfect.
Prison Job
This was a very nice 5-to-1 that went some weird places.
