SNL Digest: Lin-Manuel Miranda (10/8/16)

Lin-Manuel Miranda doesn’t throw away his shot as host of SNL.  Plus?  The show goes in hard on Donald Trump.

SNL Digest is back!  Okay, so SNL was back last week, but I was off returning from a trip to Europe for work and missed the first week of the show (and its killer debate opener), and I’ve been sick all week so putting together a post for that just wasn’t in the cards.  Now that I’m back to full health (or at least full-ish health), it was time to watch Lin-Manuel Miranda host the show for his first time.

Lin did a fantastic job, which shouldn’t really be a surprise – he’s a talented performer and improviser and he just got off a run of performing as Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton 8 shows a week.  SNL put him through the paces and allowed him to play a bunch of fun roles.

What You Missed:

Cold Open: Vice Presidential Debate

I was surprised SNL was going to wring a full sketch out of Tuesday’s debate, and then it immediately became about Friday’s remarks in the best way

With Lin, I almost would have been more surprised if there wasn’t a Hamilton reference.  So this take on “My Shot” was great (especially when he did the “never gon’ be president now” by you-know-who’s picture)

Campfire Songs

The way this slowly unfolded as to how weird it was was kind of beautiful.

Crucible Cast Party

This hit so many details correctly.

Substitute Teacher

I was on board with Leslie Jones calling the students Hot Pockets.  “Kids jaded by substitute teacher stereotypes”

A Day Off with KellyAnne Conway

Setting this to “Walking on Sunshine” was the perfect touch.

Weekend Update

  • Che/Jost on Trump’s remarks was great, especially Che’s Bill Cosby comment
  • Pete Davidson!
  • “Because nothing reassures people like an angry mob of clowns”

The Music Man

I knew from the start that this was going to be about Wells Fargo’s recent bank account shenanigans and I was not disappointed.

Diego Calls His Mom

This was a sweet piece that also got a killer dig in at marshmallow salad.

Stranger Things: BTS

Answering one of the questions I totally had during Stranger Things

Melania Moment #78

This was weird callback to the Jack Handey days, but I was okay with it. I figure there are more of these to be seeded throughout the first half of this season.

A Degree of Valor
