Brie Larson brings a fun energy and a willingness to go goofy to the Mother’s Day edition of SNL.
Brie Larson won the Oscar this year for her performance in “Room”, but don’t let that make you think she can’t do comedy as well. SNL did a great job this week of showcasing her comic timing and willingness to go anywhere the SNL writers room wanted her to for a joke.
What You Missed
Cold Open: Church Chat
I was expecting a presidential cold open, but I was not expecting church lady. This was an okay way of covering things, but this was one place where I would have loved a CNN sketch cold open. Kate McKinnon stole the show with her one line as a random model
Monologue
This was a bunch of great quick bits about Mother’s Day. Kate McKinnon’s mom writes good jokes, ya’ll.
President Barbie
This was some nice political commentary.
Near-Death Experience
This is a rehash of the alien abduction sketch from the Ryan Gosling episode earlier this year, and I’m completely fine with that.
Baby Shower
The true origins of the mom haircut, revealed. Possibly my favorite sketch of the night
Weekend Update
- The breakdown of the Trump taco bowl photo was fantastic.
- Vanessa’s child actor characters hit my comedy sweet spot
- Sasheer! This was slightly awkward, but the content was great. And the ending!
- Pete Davidson talking about his mom was sweet and hilarious (and a nice tieback to the monologue)
Game of Thrones
I don’t watch Game of Thrones, but even I knew Jon Snow wasn’t going to remain dead.
Quiz Whiz 2018
As soon as this was mentioned as Quiz Whiz 2018, I knew this was going to be political. The reveal at the end is fantastic.
Discreet Annihilation Kickstarter
Good Neighbor’s done this character before and I still love it (and the Kickstarter rewards)
Dead Bopz
I would buy this CD. I would buy multiple copies of this CD and give them to friends as gifts.
