An alternate take on Mozart in the Jungle’s second episode, in which Hailey pursues a new musical opportunity.
Mozart in the Jungle’s second episode is pretty straight forward: Hailey unexpectedly gets a job with the NYSO, indulges her nerves by practicing non-stop before her first rehearsal, and works herself into such a frenzy that she completely blows it. We’ve all been there. What if that’s not how the story went? Inspired by Into the Woods and Buzz Feed’s recent article, If Hermione Were The Main Character in “Harry Potter,” WEIO.tv presents: An Alternate Take.
Hailey Rutledge, our heroine and oboe ingenue, meets the up-and-coming conductor Rodrigo in a chance encounter. Needing her stage presence, he begs her to join the New York Symphony Orchestra.
It’s a hard decision for Hailey. Rodrigo is fun and sweet, and the other players seem talented enough. But who else will spend most of the day entertaining her neighbors with sick beats and an encyclopedic knowledge of southern rock?
Hailey turns to her friend-with-benefits, Alex, for “advice.”
Ultimately he convinces her that this is her chance to make a real difference into the world, to bring her gifts to Rodrigo, the orchestra, and all of New York. Her fellow orchestra members are thrilled at her presence, introducing themselves with gusto and expressing their gratitude in song.
(Some of them do, anyway. There’s always that one person who just doesn’t want to be there.)
After a while, the attention goes to Hailey’s head and she decides to debut her new, patent-pending techniques.
Next time, on An Alternate Take: can the orchestra continue to pick up what Hailey is putting down?
