March featured the premiere of the new version of Cosmos, a depressing look at the life of Lindsay Lohan, and the delightful Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey — Let’s do a remake of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos. Okay! Get Neil deGrasse Tyson to host. Yes! Seth MacFarlane will be the executive producer. Uh, wait a minute. And put it on Fox. …Hrmph. Like many mysteries of the universe, this combination of factors worked in producing a fascinating wonderland of science. A bit heavy-handed at times1, the effective use of animation and storytelling made for compelling television. Also, NdGT throwing shade at creationists will never get old.
Lindsay — Oh, LiLo. We were rooting for you. We were all rooting for you. OPRAH was rooting for you, so much so that she produced a documentary series about you trying to get back on track after your latest stint in rehab. But then you had to go and disappoint Oprah by missing call times and check-ins and just about everything else related to the production. We want you to succeed, but as this series demonstrated you can’t help others who do not want to help themselves.
Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge — SyFy was able to pull back the curtain on one of the most fascinating workplaces in the entertainment industry—Jim Henson’s Creature Shop—in an Apprentice-style competition. Eight creature fabricators competed in weekly challenges to win a job as a designer at the fabled shop. Unfortunately, the show focused a bit too much on the competition rather than the craft on display, though seeing the designs at work in each screen test was fascinating. Also, it is refreshing to watch a competition show where everyone is there to make friends.
