Mario Lopez, who played A.C. Slater on Saved by the Bell, hasn’t had a day off since he joined the cast of the show. What hasn’t he been up to since the series ended?
Mario Lopez joined the cast of Saved by the Bell for the second season as musclehead A.C. Slater. He stuck around through The College Years, plus made some appearances on The New Class.
A.C. Slater served many functions in the series. First, he was a rival of Zack “Preppy” Morris, particularly when it involves the affections of one Kelly Kapowski. However, it was Jessie Spano who would become his girlfriend, even though they often butted heads on gender politics, sports, pretty much everything you can think of.
Lopez has had an almost non-stop career in both acting and presenting. He currently hosts the infotainment magazine Extra and was the host for seasons two and three of Fox’s The X Factor. Although his IMDB page seems to indicate that he won’t say no to a gig, Mario Lopez hasn’t made any career-threatening choices.
A few years after his stint on Saved by the Bell, Mario Lopez starred on the USA series Pacific Blue, which was about beach cops on bicycles.1 After that gig, he went on to be a co-host to the syndicated response to The View called The Other Half. This talk show featured a panel of Lopez, Danny Bonaduce, Dick Clark, and a plastic surgeon.
Mario Lopez’s popularity resurgence came about during the third season of Dancing with the Stars, when he and partner (and at the time girlfriend) Karina Smirnoff finished in second place. Along with dancing, Mario Lopez has published multiple books on fitness and continues to do modeling from time to time. Although A.C. Slater was a somewhat flat character, the actor has plenty of talents to tap into to keep working for years to come.
- Baywatch was the big thing at the time, as you may recall. ↵
