Wednesday featured the debut of ABC Family’s Mystery Girls starring Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth. Don’t watch it. You should watch this instead…
So the opening episode of ABC Family’s Mystery Girls (which is actually the third episode of the official running order), features Tori Spelling’s character Holly trying to profit off the false reports of her death. This is an interesting choice, considering there is no mention of why TMZ would care about any of these people.1 Nothing about the show feels current or funny, so why waste your time?
Instead, you should watch Season 1 Episode 5 of The IT Crowd, currently available on Netflix. “The Haunting of Bill Crouse” features a similar plot, where head of IT Jen (Katherine Parkinson) is mistaken for dead after Moss (Richard Ayoade) panics while delivering a little white lie to sleazebag Crouse. Although Jen does not intentionally profit from her mistaken death (she thinks she’s receiving an Employee of the Month Award) the Three’s Company-esque misunderstanding works on multiple levels between multiple characters. Plus, the goofiness that permeates throughout The IT Crowd gels with the central plot and sets the tone for the rest of the series.
This is the episode I recommend people start with when checking out the show. There were a lot of kinks in the first six-episode season of the show, most of which get ironed out by episode 5. You will be able to suss out relationships quickly and the second season begins with a completion of the revamping. Even if you just watch this one episode, it will be a better way of spending 22 minutes than Mystery Girls.
