TripTank Stumbles, Totters, Slumps Over, Possibly Drunk

I was way too sober to watch this.

Show

TripTank, Wednesdays at 10:30pm on Comedy Central.

Premise

Twenty-two minutes of skits (not sketches – most are less than a minute) in a ton of different animation styles. A few of said styles don’t look like they were built in Flash.

Pedigree

From the production company that did the vastly superior Robot Chicken and various shows on Adult Swim. It seems like it’s targeting that Adult Swim demographic, or whoever likes Workaholics. Bob Odenkirk, Zach Galifianakis, Kumail Nanjiani, Wayne Brady, and even Larry David are reportedly contributing material.

What Works

There was a skit late in the ep that involved an ogre guarding a treasure from a knight, but the knight knows the only two riddles the ogre knows and answers them before he finishes asking them. Also, the ogre is a little unfulfilled in his job and wants to chat about that. This one made me crack a smile.

What Doesn’t Work

Everything else. Look, comedy is totally a matter of taste, but if you’re reading our site and like the shows we watch for the reasons we watch them, I doubt you’ll find any use for TripTank. Too much screeching, too little wit, too predictable in its beats, too much reliance on bodily functions as punchlines without doing anything interesting with said functions.1 It’s like Kentucky Fried Movie without the thematic guide, poorer writing, and… you know what, I’m not going to denigrate that film by putting it into even a negative comparison with this show.

Verdict

Watch the first three skits. Or any three skits picked at random. Your reaction to those skits will be the same for the rest of the show. If you still really want to give this one a chance, I recommend light substance abuse.

Really I recommend watching Robot Chicken instead.

  1. Yes, I just wrote that. You can do potty humor way better than this and still not become Aristophanes’ The Frogs.
